Chiaroscuro is an Italian term, were chiaro translates to light and scuro translates to dark. This refers to the balance and pattern of light and shading in a painting or drawing.

Here is a photo taken by PDH96 called Fountain. This photo is an example of chiaroscuro because you can clearly see the balance between black and white from the choice of colour scheme used. What i like about this work is the effect of the water coming off the fountain because you can clearly see the reflection from the light bouncing off the water. This effects makes it more visible to the eye.
My Candle shoot can be linked to this technique because in some of my photos you can clearly see the balance between light and dark, even though i haven't decided to edit my images using a black and white colour scheme. However, the only negative of using colour is when i edit my images the contrast of the shadows will be very faint compared to a black and white edit.

This image is called a Christmas candle and the light used in this image is a good example because the white wax against the dark background becomes more noticeable to the eye. Also this effect will make the detail printed on the candle more noticeable because it has a dark outline.
